Inauguration of the First International Scientific Conference on Humanities and Educational Sciences
with Distinguished Participation from the Arjaa Institute (AIRDUSA)
Erbil – July 13, 2025
The College of Basic Education at Salahaddin University hosted the opening ceremony of the First International Scientific Conference, titled:
“Humanities and Educational Sciences: Between the Challenges of Reality and the Pursuit of Sustainable Development.”
This pioneering academic initiative was jointly organized by the Colleges of Basic Education at Salahaddin and Kirkuk Universities, and the College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Tikrit, in strategic partnership with the Arjaa Institute for Environmental Research, Sustainable Development, and Renewable Energy, and the Iraqi Association for Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance. The conference convenes from July 13 to 14, 2025.
The event was distinguished by the presence of prominent scholars, international and regional experts, and leading academic institutions, alongside a select group of Iraqi universities, research centers, and educational and civil society organizations.
In his keynote address, Dr. Serwan A. Ismail, President of the Arjaa Institute, underscored the strategic imperative of integrating the humanities and educational sciences within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized that the true foundation for constructing resilient and thriving societies lies in the transformation of educational systems to align with contemporary environmental, economic, and social realities.
Dr. Ismail further highlighted the Institute’s commitment to advancing Green Education as a cornerstone of sustainable learning environments. He advocated for the incorporation of environmental consciousness into national education policies and curricula, aiming to cultivate ecological responsibility and a sense of global citizenship among future generations.
The conference featured eight interdisciplinary themes, encompassing:
1. Linguistics and Literary Studies
2. Educational, Psychological, and Social Sciences
3. Contemporary Teaching Methodologies and Blended Learning
4. Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance
5. Legal and Legislative Frameworks for Educational Reform and Sustainable Development
6. Sustainability in Educational Environments
7. Quranic Sciences and Islamic Studies
8. Historical and Geographical Inquiry
This conference constitutes a significant academic milestone in the ongoing evolution of educational and research paradigms in Iraq and the wider region. It forms part of a concerted effort to foster convergence between humanistic inquiry and the imperatives of sustainable development, while catalyzing new pathways for collaboration among academic institutions, research bodies, and international organizations in pursuit of quality education that responds meaningfully to the pressing challenges of our time.
